Stop Guessing Your Exfoliator
Let’s be real. Walking into a skincare shop or scrolling through Facebook pages can feel like a nightmare. You see a dozen different acids with names like Glycolic or Salicylic and wonder why you’re paying 1,500 BDT for a tiny bottle. Most of us just buy whatever the most popular influencer suggests. But that’s a mistake. Using the wrong acid on your skin is a fast track to a damaged skin barrier and a very red face.
Exfoliation isn’t about scrubbing your face with harsh beads. It’s about chemical exfoliants. These dissolve the “glue” holding dead skin cells together. Depending on your skin type, you need either an AHA or a BHA. Choosing the wrong one is basically wasting your money.
AHA: For the Glow and the Texture
AHAs are water-soluble. They work on the surface. Think of them as a “deep clean” for the top layer of your skin. Glycolic acid is the strongest and most common. Lactic acid is gentler. If your skin feels rough, looks dull, or has those annoying dark spots from old pimples, AHAs are your best bet.
They’re great for fading pigmentation. However, they don’t go deep into the pores. If you spend your afternoons in humid Dhaka weather, you might find AHAs make your skin feel a bit “tacky” if you use too much. Keep it simple. Use them twice a week at night. If you have dry skin from sitting in an AC office all day, Lactic acid is a better choice because it hydrates while it exfoliates.
BHA: The Pore Vacuum
BHA, specifically Salicylic acid, is oil-soluble. This means it doesn’t just sit on top. It dives deep into the pores to clear out oil and gunk. If you struggle with blackheads, whiteheads, or active acne, BHA is the only way to go. It’s a lifesaver for oily skin.
Think of it as a vacuum for your pores. It stops the oil buildup that leads to breakouts. Unlike AHAs, BHAs are generally better for sensitive, acne-prone skin. They calm inflammation. If you’re constantly fighting breakouts during the monsoon season, a 2% BHA liquid is usually the sweet spot for most people.
Splurge or Save?
You don’t need the most expensive brand to see results. Some high-end serums are just fancy packaging and a huge markup. I’ve found that mid-range brands often provide the same active percentages for half the price. Don’t fall for the hype of a 5,000 BDT cream if a 1,200 BDT serum does the same job.
Spend your money on the active ingredient, not the brand name. If a product has 2% Salicylic acid, it’ll work regardless of whether the bottle looks “luxury.” Save your money for a high-quality sunscreen. That’s where you should actually splurge. Acids make your skin sensitive to the sun. If you exfoliate at night but skip sunscreen the next morning, you’re just damaging your skin further.
How to Use Them Without Burning Your Face
Start slow. Please. Don’t use an AHA and a BHA on the same night. That’s how you end up with a chemical burn. Pick one and use it once or twice a week. Your skin needs time to adjust.
- Wash your face and pat it completely dry. Applying acids to damp skin can cause them to penetrate too deeply and irritate you.
- Apply a pea-sized amount. Less is more.
- Wait 10-15 minutes before applying moisturizer.
- Never, ever forget SPF 50 the next morning.
If your skin starts stinging or peeling, stop immediately. Give your skin a week to recover. Stick to a basic cleanser and moisturizer until the redness goes away. Patience is the only way to get that “glass skin” look without the irritation.
The Local Reality
Shopping for skincare in Bangladesh is tricky. You’ve got to worry about fakes and long delivery times. Cash on Delivery (COD) is the safest bet, but always check the seal and the expiration date before the delivery rider leaves. It’s frustrating when you wait five days for a package only to find a leaked bottle.
Check for reputable sellers who provide authentic products. I usually look for shops that have a clear return policy and honest reviews. Emart Skincare Bangladesh is a solid option if you’re looking for a reliable place to pick up these acids without worrying about authenticity.
Your skin isn’t a laboratory. Experiment slowly. Find what works for your specific budget and skin type. You don’t need a 10-step routine to look good. A simple cleanser, one exfoliant, a moisturizer, and sunscreen are enough for most of us.
You can find a great range of these exfoliants at Emart if you’re ready to start your routine.
